my husband and i went to Alaska while he was visiting the states. The original plan was to actually get MARRIED in Alaska, but because we were flying on standby tickets and school was starting, and, and, and...
we ended up eloping and just doing it on New Year's Day in Ohio. haha!

This might officially be my last actual shoot in America. I can't believe it.
My fiancee arrives this coming weekend and we'll be so busy getting things ready for the reception here in Ohio then the actual wedding itself--- it's going to be so crazy here soon!
Although... i would really love to get a shoot in up in Alaska... I love those mountains and all that snow... :-)

This is one of the pastors who went on my first trip to Ireland, and his family. He is the youth leader for my church here in Cincinnati. Beautiful family, inside and out!

i love this one. They are so cute together :-)

Look how pretty she is! I wish i was half as gorgeous at 13 as she is... M just got her braces off, and i swear- she has the most sparkling personality and the sweetest countenance i have ever met in a young woman of her age. Look out world!

As many of you know (and many of you don't), i shall be moving to Ireland. I'm sure there will be plenty of photos to come from the land of ire, (and you can also follow my more "life" oriented blog here) as my man is also a great wedding photographer (and a very talented landscape photographer). You can check out some of his awesomeness here.

Also, i'd like to thank Sharon of Sharon Elaine Photography for mentoring me, and helping me become the wedding photographer i am today. Without her and other good friends, i would never have gotten this far. Thank you!

Mini-Freedom

I have been accused of being a camera hoarder. I have many cameras, and have had many cameras in the past. I currently have in my possession:

Canon F1
Minolta Maxxum 5D
oldsauce Kodak digital POS (woot! 3.1 Megapixels)- my very first digital camera.
Canon 5D Mark II (the "magic camera")
Kodak M1033

i recently sold my trusty Canon Rebel Xt to a friend of mine after 3 years of faithful service to me. I loved it and treated it well. The camera went with me to some very odd places (ie- armpit deep, wading into a pond; under a train; on roads; dangled out windows; atop fence posts; in mud; near glaciers; on planes, trains, and automobiles; and across the country, to name a few). I must say that without the camera, which i bought for school, i wouldn't be the photographer i am today.

BUT... i have been spoiled by the majesty that is the "professional DSLR".
Because of upcoming vacations, trips, and adventures; as well as because of missed photographic opportunities in the past due to not having a camera (because let's face it, they're heavy to carry along on a hike with the lens and other various accoutrement... ) i have purchased a small digital camera. Just a little point and shoot digital number. I felt a little dirty when i bought it, like i was cheating on a spouse or an old friend.
I am now the owner of the Kodak M1033. Ten glorious megapixels, HD video capacity, and sheer awesomeness all wrapped up in a tiny little metal box with a compact lens.

I have been spoiled by the knowledge of apertures vs. shutter speeds. The way a certain millimeter of lens will compact an image to bring something to a photograph. Depth of field and lighting difficulties are little to no match for me and my Magic Camera.
This new little camera is... well... easy. I can't quite wrap my brain around it.
It's like going from a PC to a Mac. LOL
The solution is almost always more simple than i expect it to be.

At the same time, i feel a slight sense of freedom in the little Kodak that now resides in my purse. I can be anywhere and see anything interesting and STILL be able to capture it. I have the knowledge that if i WANTED to print something, i could and it wouldn't be all pixely. I dont have to carry around 500+ pictures on my cell phone (although i still do). I have a flash!

I must say that although i will never forsake my professional equipment, it's nice to go out and not be regarded as "the photographer" all the time, unless i want to.

Look at the smallness!! Ahh... sweet freedom.

This is a self portrait i created last night after a very funny conversation in my bible study. A member came with his new iPhone and of course, we exchanged phones and talked about all the cool things for it. It was like we had our own language. Then i realized:
i'm addicted to my phone. I must say that being addicted to something is terrible. I am not addicted to any sort of stimulant, drug, or amphetamine legal or otherwise. In fact, just the opposite- i do my best not to actually take ANY medications at all. Even when i'm sick. I figure, there are enough preservatives and crazy things in food and the water that i drink every day that i'll already either live to be 150 or die of a horrible flesh-eating cancer any minute now.
However, I do find other things that i can't go long without. My iPhone happens to be the first item that comes to mind on that list.
I love to stay connected. I have apps for all kinds of useful things like weather, stocks, Facebook, and even a little app to tell me what that awesome song on the radio is that i know nothing about. My iPhone is my vise. I'd even go so far as to compare it to a magic wand like in Harry Potter.
Sure, the phone didn't "choose me" or anything, but it's completely my own. My customizations, ring tones, pet names for friends when they call, photos, music, apps, notes... I can use someone elses iPhone (wand) but it doesn't have the same feel. It works but it's like wearing someone else's shoes... Functional but not comfortable. There's no magic.

Really, there's nowhere that i go without it, that i can think of. I sleep next to it (albeit on airplane mode), i drive with it plugged into the radio, it's always in a pocket on my person or in my purse. I use it as a GPS. It sits with me at work, in church, and at the pool. I take it into the kitchen when i cook and use it as a timer, i plug it into my stereo at home, and i use it when i shop (the lists i make on it are endless). I track my health, what i eat, how much i weigh on it. I saw an app that allows you to take credit card payments for your small business and thought "wow!" That's only the gravy. I can still make calls, text, take pictures too... but with style. LOL

I find myself wondering when my plan expires so i can upgrade to the new 3Gs, but also loathing the thought of getting used to a new phone (even if it IS an iPhone) because this one has become so much of my life. Like a friend. How sad is that? I have a best friend (who is human, lol) and a little digital technological, yet immobile robot-computer thing.

I go through withdrawals when i leave it at home. "who's going to text me? whatever shall i do without music if the silence gets too loud? What if i get LOST? How will i check my email? What about facebook? How shall i tweet?!"

The consideration of purposely leaving it off or in airplane mode all during the day as a form of "weening" has come to mind... briefly.

This was taken on my wedding day; February 15, 2003.
Life was different.
Daddy was still able to stand.
Mommy was still alive.
I was LDS.
I had a very small wedding. My reception was held in the living room.
I did not have friends to help me plan for things.
I did not know what i was doing.
I did not have a goal for myself.
I did not have my hair done, nails done, or wear makeup to my own wedding.
I wore tennis shoes under my dress. Not cute ones, either.
I was eighteen years old. SO young.
I thought i knew everything.
I thought i was ready for life.
I thought i was ready for forever.

six years later,
I am divorced.
I am older.
I am wiser.
I have goals & plans for my life.
Daddy is a quadriplegic.
Mommy is with Jesus.
I am a Christian. Closer to Father than i have ever been.
I discovered some things are less important than i once thought they were.
I have many close friends now, and it's amazing. I love them.
I still don't know everything.
I've lived more than I had then. I have experiences that i both cherish and that i'm not proud of.
I'm actually ready for forever. Just have to find it.

Forever comes in more forms than one expects though.

weddings, Weddings, WEDDINGS!

Oh, how i love to shoot weddings. Some photographers (usually retired, or just having shot one for a friend) lament to me about the hardships of their weddings past and present. The pressure of getting "the shot" at "the moment" is daunting. I understand. But for some reason- i just LOVE shooting weddings. Maybe it's the hopeless romantic in me. Maybe it's the hope that one day i'll have the happiness that these couples share. Maybe it's the idea of love that spurs my joy...

Maybe i'm just funny like that. Every time i hold my camera up to my eye, i feel completely happy. When i direct the bride to turn her head just so, or ask the bridal party to jump in the air on the count of three... I feel this surge of overwhelming giddiness that i'm honored to be a part of someone's big day.

The florist, the caterer, the pastor, the DJ, the wedding planner- i must say that no one of these get to enjoy the wedding like i do. I have the privilege of capturing things the way i see them. I have the pleasure of presenting my wedding couples with pictures that i took- confident that they will see them and be happy because they CHOSE me to take their pictures.

I love the details, i love the smiles of everyone as they get ready, the way the groomsmen joke, the way the bridesmaids fawn, the kiss, the walk, the love...

ahhh... i love my job.

These two lovebirds i met through a church group i attend during the week. They're such a sweet couple together and i can't wait to shoot their wedding in June! We were fortunate to have a lovely day for this shoot, although i was really looking forward to the cloud cover that had originally appeared- i'm really happy with the way these turned out!

Q City Players

I had the honor of photographing the Q City Players last night at Ballet Tech in Cincinnati. It was in short, Hilarious! I'm seriously glad that my lens had an image stabilizer because i was laughing.
My face was in pain by the end of the night. Does a work out count if it's just your cheeks? (i mean, FACE cheeks...)

It was good also, to get out and dance (if you want to call it that...) afterward. I had the pleasure of meeting a few new people and would love to get to know them better.

She is delightfully dim, and when she sits, she is shaped like a pear. Therefore, i call her "Pear" although her real name is Abbie.

Greetings from a Winter Wonderland!

This week has been a very trying week indeed... A lesson i think God was teaching me this week was called "patience".

We had tons of snow. Not only snow, but freezing rain--- meaning layers of horrible slick icy conditions. First was a few inches of wet snow, followed by 2-3 inches of freezing rain, followed by a few more inches of snow, concluded by a layer of freezing rain and more snow.
*sigh*

it took me an hour to dig out of my car the morning i decided i couldn't afford to not be paid for another snow day... and the snow was so deep after chipping my car out that i actually had to step DOWN into my car to get into it.
needless to say i got stuck a little. When rocking the car out of its lovely spot- brute strength (pushing) reigned supreme and i was finally on my way.

My best friend and i went for a walk in the park right after the heaviest snow and took pictures that i thought might be nice to share (dont forget, you can click on the pictures to enlarge them, if you like and to get back to the blog, just use the "back" button on your browser window):

Elizabeth and Craig had their bridal shoot today! They were married Sept. 20, 2008 and decided to get all dressed up again for the shoot a month later. I'm glad we had the opportunity to do this- as it seems that bridal shots are much more relaxed *after* the whole wedding ceremony and the excitement of the Big Day in and of itself are behind us!
All in all, we had a successful shoot. I had a blast!

My dear friend Jahara approached me about couple pics as her boyfriend, Will is leaving the state to go to college.

We got drenched in rain during this shoot. It seemed we would seek shelter (for my camera's sake) and not too long after, the rain would let up- but the moment we got set up for the picture, it would start to rain again! it was too funny!

We ended up with some fun pictures (in between showers) and i'm glad they weren't afraid to get a little wet!

I shot their engagement session in April and was able to fly out to Alaska for that shoot too! we had a blast, and i must say- it's a lot less stressful as the photographer to be with the bride two days ahead of the wedding, lol!

Alaska

I arrived in Alaska yesterday morning at 10:30am. My friend Heidi and her mom, Cathy picked me up from the airport and we went to lunch at Costco. MMM! Hot Dog!
Cathy let me know that her husband, Dave had a small plane trip planned, and since i hadn't ever been up in one.
The plan was to fly out at noon to Twin Lakes (over the mountains and through the woods, about a 90 minute flight) to pick up some campers and bring them home. I was so excited!!!

If you know me, you know that A) i get sunburned if i'm out in the sun for more than 5 minutes, and B) i get motion sick when i LOOK at a car.

so... i get up in the air, and i'm taking pictures left and right- then i puke. Definitely, the hot dog was not so good coming back up. Neither was the omlette i had on the plane... ugh.

we picked up the two gentlemen from the little cabin on the lake, and Dave decided it would be fun to swoop in closer to the mountain for a better look at a Ram that was sunbathing... and up came the remnants of what wasn't puked up earlier. haha!
it was all fine though. i wasn't miserable- i had a great time! i slept most of the way back though because i was just too exhausted from everything that had gone on that day so far.
Towards the end of the trip, we saw two bull moose and two black bears before we made it back to Anchorage. They were the size of grains of rice from the altitude we were at, so sadly, there are no pictures- there just wasn't a point.

When we got back, Heidi picked me up and we went back to Cathy's place to dip fortune cookies in chocolate for the wedding reception.

after that, we went back and took family pictures of Heidi, George, and Dakota at the park.

after which, we went to bed- while the sun was still up, at 10:30 :-)

*sigh.
i love it here.

Sorry i haven't updated in a while. i dont have internet at home so i have to be a sneak and do this at work...

My friend Chase is in town and i had the opportunity to take some pictures of him before he leaves.
He's from this area but lives in Chicago for now while he works on his tests to get into Law School.
I'm new to the area i just moved to, so we had an adventure! He introduced me to the fact that i live right next to the Puget Sound so we went to visit the beach. It's been super sunny this last week which if you know anything about Washington- a week of sun is something that doesn't happen very often...
i'm glad we had the chance to take advantage :-)

it's been awhile since my last post. lots has been going on in my life and i haven't really wanted to pick up the camera... but! remember the maternity shoot from a little while ago?
she's back! and beautiful as ever! i can only hope that my tummy will be as cute as hers is when i am pregnant... no stretch marks and perfectly round :-) i felt really inspired during this shoot. it really helped some of the photographer's block i was having (along with the good weather!) and i was tempted to go on a shoot today...

...but my cat ran away.

yes... it is winter here in the pacific northwest... which means hardly any sun. And when there IS sun- i'm usually indoors working. Sigh... how i have missed the sun.
BUT TODAY was about to be a fiasco!
i drove all the freakin' way to Seattle to pick up my 4x5 negatives from being developed- but no dice. Ivey was closed. CLOSED ON SATURDAY!? who is closed on SATURDAY?! sigh.

So i drove all the way home empty-handed in the rain, ONLY to NOTICE the SUN had come OUT to visit for a few moments. And lo and behold- part (and by part, i mean a measly single branch) or my neighbor's christmas tree was hanging out in their yard... with the sun shining on it!
Now, only twenty or so minutes later, it's dark again outside and the sun is gone.

but i captured a piece of it!!

well school started. It's nice so far! i need to get started on a project in color theory- for some reason, i just *love* forgetting assignments. Sigh.
Also- i need a few things for classes. ie- books, programs... ugh! so expensive. i hate debt and i have SO SO MUCH. i'm barely keeping my head above water- i dont know how i would make it without Matthew taking care of our bills and such. he's amazing.

It's Matthew's birthday today. this is...

We had some sun today and it was SO BEAUTIFUL that i couldn't just stay inside and do nothing... So i went out and practiced some macro photos. Matthew left for his Orchestra coaching job and i was inspired to shoot some better pictures of his violin. It has a neat history, but all i can remember is that it's antique.

Since it's still cold out, i just took some shots around our yard. i didn't want to wander too far and freeze :)

Well- my site is live! yaaay! http://www.absoluteshot.com (technically it's been live for a while but i think it's mostly finished...

i finally got a 'contact' form up and working (thank goodness!) i know this stuff comes easy for many but it just took forEVER to tinker with the contact form and finally make it work.
Also, there's new stuff in my Maternity section AND i added a 'fine art' section... which will be interesting.

I've decided that one of these days i'm going to print something on gliceé just to see exactly how amazing it is... and if i can afford it... and if it's something i would want to offer others. hmm...

in the mean-time- Christmas is coming. (ahh!)
and i still haven't gotten exactly everything for everyone. See- there's this thing- Lack of Funds- that's got me down. haha! glad i get paid this week!

My friend Craig flew in from Ohio this last week for a little visit! it was much fun and made me re-realize how much i really miss him and Ashley. It would be so nice if i could convince them to move here... fat chance, really- but it would be wonderful having a nice couple to be friends with again. I miss them.

This is someone who found me on craigslist- this is a portfolio building shoot, so it's unpaid, but my thoughts are: if i got a good picture (or a set of good ones) then i'm happy with driving out there.

After this session, i went and took pictures of her friend (a small family) but i haven't post processed them yet. Soon!

You see, here in Washington- when they say "partly cloudy", it means "it's gonna rain"...
i hate that Fall means lots of rain. it's so hard to schedule a shoot as it is, not knowing what the weather is going to do. Natural light is what i do! i NEED to be outside (or inside with a good set of open windows)
Not to mention the fact that we're the northwest so sadly the sun leaves us around 4 in the day.

I got to meet "A" and "R" today. They are recently engaged! YAY! I had lots of fun with their shoot. They're pretty easygoing and seem to have a lot in common with Matt and i, which made the conversation easy and they relaxed right away (which obviously makes my job much easier!) However, i didn't plan it right and not only was it threatening to sprinkle rain on us- my location was too dark for a shoot.

le sigh.

so we must reschedule. Luckily, i got some über cute ones of them before we went to location #2 and we were thwarted by light.
Thanks you two! i can't wait until we have a better chance!

Happy Thanksgiving! The first one is me and my brother and sister. i'm on the left. My nephew is 5 and he has autism. These are the first ever pictures i've gotten of him smiling! He and i had a special moment this evening when we played together. He ran to me and i tickled him then i ran away, and he came to find me, repeat... Then afterwards, we got some great pictures of him with his mom - my sister.
I can't wait to get some of these printed!
It was nice to have family this Thanksgiving.

we had fun! i got to experience a new local park which is always a good thing. It's currently under construction to make a lake and a brige (which i assume will be done in the summer) which will be SUPER AWESOME for pictures! Oh, i'm excited.

Anyhow- this is my first family since i moved to washington a year ago (i only recently decided to start taking pictures and trying to make a modest profit). I posted an ad on Craigslist and look what came of it! yaaay! No dollas yet, but after a few more sessions i think i'll feel confident enough to sell my stuff.

I ordered an external flash today and a diffuser. They should arrive within the week! Joy of joys!!!

Gasworks Park

I went to Gasworks Park today to meet some other photographers in the area. I made corn chowder and brought it along to keep us warm. There was a 90% chance of rain and we got sun!!!
So i got to Gasworks and nobody else showed up. I called my dad and he and Barbara came out for some pictures! A little later, my brother came out too and we had a great session. My dad had to leave around the time my brother came, but it was fun still!

thus far it's unanimously the second one being the favorite for it's 'cleanliness'
i like it too, but i'm considering revising it and taking out the serifs where the letters intersect and also possibly making the 'a' and the 'g' overlap... hmmm lots of fun? maybe

this golden orb in the sky... ? it's warm and bright... i feel like it's familiar...

just kidding. i went out today in the sun and took some pictures. i'm having trouble with noise but i have a suspicion that it has something to do with my ISO being too high. i'll work on it.

anyhow- this is a branch on an old tree in the yard at our house.

my brother. That's who.
He asked my boyfriend to caddy for him, then asked if i would come along to take pictures. i'm not a big fan of rain (sigh. i picked the wrong state to live in then- lol!) but i went. My brother brought a propane heater that kept me warm (a little) and aside from my feet going numb... it was... no. it wasn't fun.

alas. My brother is happy with his pictures (i think) and i got some more stuff to show off!

WE CARVED PUMPKINS! it was a blast as it was our first time. We bought pumpkins last year but waited too long to carve them and they rotted. it was sad.

My aunts and uncles are in town for a couple days from Kansas. My dad and his Barbara took them to Seattle for a day. My brother and i drove up to see them!

have i mentioned that Matthew got a barbeque?
he hounded me for months. i was not all for it because we have nowhere to put one and i didn't want to clutter up the front of our house...
but we moved.
and now we have a porch...
so i caved.

he bought it a little over 2 weeks ago, but i'm slow about getting pictures off my camera sometimes. i lose

but oh well. he enjoys it and that's all that matters. i'm glad he's happy :-)

it really is the best! My bf and i went out today to pick out pumpkins to carve. it was a BLAST!!

pretty soon, i'll be getting my lenses in the mail so maybe i'll have to go back out!! i'm so excited!

this is the sky a few nights ago. it was super amazing and cleared up just in time for sunset!
i was distracted by how awesome it was and didn't take pictures in a straight line... oh well. better luck next time!

I had a job interview for a blood bank to be a scheduler. The interview went well... let's hope it works out and they decide to call me back!!!

Fall is here! i can't believe i haven't gone out with my camera recently. it's just that it's been rainy and gloomy here for the past few weeks and i just can't shake the funk. Much to the dismay of my boyfriend, i've been taking to turning on all the lights in the house so that i can feel better.

Matthew bought a grill. Yes. I finally caved. I told him ' as long as it's not too big. ' and he did a pretty good job.
I do enjoy grilling and i'll be glad to help out and do it with him year round!

Yay for little school assignments... "little" might be an understatement, but alas. it is done.

it's due tomorrow, but today is stinkin' Labor Day so i can't get it printed anywhere. SUCH a pain in the butt.

But anyhow. My boyfriend had fun guessing what all the pieces are, so have at it! leave me a comment with all your guesses and next time i'm on here, i'll post all the answers in the comment section of the blog...

I've been in college at the Art Institute of Seattle for almost 2 quarters now and i realized i've not posted or shared any of my photos online anywhere... i lose.
This particular set was for my "Abstract" color project for Photographic Design. I would love to show some of my large format photos but alas... they're negatives only and i haven't scanned them and don't know how.
